Brazilian legend Pelé dies at 82

Abedi Ayew Pele, (born November 5, 1964, Ghana), Ghanaian football (soccer) player who is the only person to win the African Player of the Year award three times in a row (1991–93). As an attacking midfielder at Olympique de Marseille in France, Abedi Pele was one of the first African players to make an impact in European club football.

Nicknamed “Pele” in recognition of his superior ability, compared to Brazilian great Pele, Abedi Pele’s nomadic career began in 1978 with Ghana’s Real Tamale. He became a member of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, which won the African Cup of Nations in Libya in 1982.

Pele, the greatest soccer player of all time and the most decorated athlete in the history of the “beautiful game,” has died at the age of 82.

Pele’s death was confirmed in an Instagram post on Thursday. The exact cause of death was not reported, however, in December 2022, it was revealed that Pele – the pseudonym of Brazilian-born Edson Arantes do Nascimento – was in palliative care at a hospital in São Paulo following reports that he had passed away. Responding to chemotherapy treatment for colon cancer, which he was diagnosed with in September 2021.
