Why does Qatar celebrate Qatar National Day?

Qatar National Day, also known as the Founder’s Day, is celebrated annually on December 18 to commemorate the country’s unification in 1878 and marks the day that Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammad Bin Thani succeeded his father as leader of the tribes of Qatar.

History of Qatar National Day

Qatar began to develop into an important settlement in the eighteenth century. After control of various local territories, including treaties with the British, the Ottoman Empire arrived in 1871 at the request of the Emir.

On 18 December 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani as ruler of Qatar, becoming the first emir of a dynasty that continues to this day.

Ruling Qatar until his death in 1913, Sultan Jassim is revered as ‘The Founder’ in Qatar because during his reign he united the tribes of the peninsula, marking the creation of the modern state of Qatar. His leadership, both politically and militarily, defined Qatar’s status as a nation vis-à-vis the two major powers in the region at the time – the Ottomans and the British.

During World War I, the Ottoman Empire collapsed after losing several key battles. Qatar participated in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire, forcing the Ottomans from Doha in 1915.

Qatar became a British protectorate in 1916. Qatar gained independence from the United Kingdom and became an independent sovereign state on 3 September 1971. The 3rd of September is originally celebrated as the National Day of Qatar.
